	Tung Oil Tree (Aleurites fordii) belongs to the Euphorbia Family (Euphorbiaceae) along with the candlenut tree (Kukui Nut), another species with seeds rich in unsaturated oils. For centuries tung oil has been used for paints and waterproof coatings, and as a component of caulk and mortar. Tung Oil is an ingredient in ink and is commonly used for a lustrous finish on wood. Some woodworkers consider tung oil to be one of the best natural finishes for wood. Tung Oil Tree is a small to medium-sized deciduous tree growing to 60 feet tall, with a spreading crown. The bark is smooth and thin, and bleeds latex if cut. The leaves are alternate, simple, 4.5–25 cm long and 3.5–22 cm broad, heart-shaped or with three shallow, maple-like lobes, green above and below, red conspicuous glands at the base of the leaf, and with a 5.5–26 cm long petiole. The flowers are 2.5–3.5 cm diameter, with five pale pink to purple petals with streaks of darker red or purple in the throat. Tung Oil trees are monoecious with individual flowers either male or female, but produced together in the inflorescences. The flowers appear before or with the leaves in loose, terminal clusters. it Green initially,  leaves becoming dull brown when ripe in autumn.

	The wood of the Tung Oil Tree is lightweight and strong, and is sometimes used as a substitute for balsa or basswood. The Tung tree is valued for tung oil, which is derived from the seeds of the tree. Tung oil, also called China wood oil or nut oil, has traditionally been used in lamps in China. In modern times, it is used as an ingredient in paint, varnish, and caulk. It is also used as a wood finish for furniture and other wooden objects.  The fruit is a hard, woody pear-shaped drupe, containing four or five large, oily seeds. Drupaceous fruit and seeds of the tung oil tree are the source of tung oil used on fine furniture. The oil-rich seeds are produced inside a thick, woody endocarp layer. It produces nuts that are poisonous, with each fruit typically containing 4-5 seeds. Female flowers are followed by rounded, dark green fruits. Fruits ripen to brown in fall. This tree has escaped cultivation across portions of the South, especially the coastal sections of Mississippi, Alabama, and Florida. It may be a tree of great promise because of the oil content in the tung oil nuts.  After processing to remove gums in the oil, it can also be used as a motor oil. Aleuron in Greek means with flour in reference to the white flour-like dusting present on juvenile leaves. Soot from burned tung oil is a main ingredient (lampblack) in India ink.

LIVE PLANTS ARE PERISHABLE. For this reason uninsurable.         When you order a plant we assume you are prepared to care for it. Please have potting media and a container prepared for your plant before it arrives. Shipping can be stressful on a plant, and any mistakes that you make upon arrival can stress the plant further, which is not good. Proper care is critical upon arrival. It is your responsibility to know how to care for the plant. Not every plant that I order through the mail survives, and I am aware of that and accept the risk when I order. This is the risk that you as the buyer accept, because there is no way to know what kind of conditions it will endure in the trip to your door. My responsibility ends when a live plant is delivered to your door. Live arrival is guaranteed, eternal survival is up to you. Please Do NOT email me a week after potting your plant, and make a claim it arrived damaged. From delivery confirmation, you have only 48 hours from delivery confirmation to make any claim.
