~Cupuassu~ Theobroma grandiflora aka: Cupuaçu, Cupuazú, or Copoasu Family: Sterculiaceae Native to Brazil Related to cacao, the Cupuassu is popular in its native Brazil, but little known elsewhere. Unlike cacao, the pulp of the  large-fruited Cupuassu is used rather than the seeds. Pulp is processed into beverages and desserts. Fruit is highly sought after and production is thus far  limited to Brazil where demand greatly exceeds supply.

Description: A small to medium sized tree ranging from 15-60ft. Leaves are large and much like the  cacao tree. Fruits are borne on the trunk and apexes of main branches. Fruit is large, from 5-10" long, 3-5" wide. Hardiness: Not frost hardy. Hardy to 45-50F. Growing Environment: Cupuassu prefers a very humid environment with little temperature variation  throughout the year, and mean temperatures around 75F. Trees need lots of water for good growth. Propagation: Usually by seeds, which should not be  allowed to dry out before planting. Uses: Pulp is used to make a wide variety of beverages, preserves, and desserts. A form of chocolate and cocoa butter can be made from the seeds. Native Range: Native to south and southeastern Amazonia, Brazil. Cupuassu is not found outside of Brazil except for a few garden specimens.
	Cupuassu bears brown pods filled with sweet pulp used in  sherbets and ice cream. Seeds can be roasted and eaten. Fuzzy new growth is an intense purple-red. Best grown in an area sheltered from wind. Exposure to windy conditions and cool temperatures will result in few blooms and no fruit. Benefits from light applications  of mulch several times per year. USDA Zone 10B or 11. Rare in cultivation. Slightly acid soil high in organic matter. Young plants prefer a protected area with light shade. Fertilize several times per year. Keep moist.

If you want one of this and one of that, it is hard to discount  much as each different species requires it's own prep, packing, then at USDA each has to be unwrapped and inspected  then repacked. USDA requires me to clean and prepare every last piece before we drive them to the Inspection Station on  the other side of the island. It takes my wife and I, 2-3 days to pack items and get ready to ship. The whole next day  we drive around the island and get inspected (2-3 hours), then drive to the Airport Post Office to drop off. It takes  the same work with the same type item if you can understand.

Do some research before they arrive or seek experienced help.  Small plants need protection from many things, wind, sun, dry-out. They do well just in the garage or living  room. They need good light but not sunlight (full sun will burn small plants). Small pots dry-out easily. Just sitting in a shallow tray of water works  well. The idea is to keep the plants from dehydrating. Be careful if you decide to re-pot.  Re-potting voids any warranty. Plants are easily damaged with new/different mix. Use NO fertilizers (this may kill your plants).  Proper care is critical upon arrival. Live Plants are NOT GUARANTEED  to survive under your care. DO NOT expect any live plant to be GUARANTEED to remain alive. Plants are NOT GUARANTEED TO SURVIVE after you begin Care!
