	The Red Butterfly Wing (Christia vespertilionis) plant (aka "Red SwallowTail") is one of our  all time favorites. Despite its exotic appearance, it's one of the easiest plants to grow! The leaves look exactly like that of the Zebra Longwing butterfly, as you can see, they are purplish-red with dark red  stripes. This unusual species has variegated, bat-shaped foliage in eye-catching shades of purplish-red.  It does NOT attract butterflies – it just looks like a flock of butterflies.
Christia has thin stems that, like the leaves, are slightly hairy. Flower clusters grow from shoots that pop out from the  stems just above the leaf stalk. They produce clusters of small near white-colored flowers in the late summer or fall. If pollinated, a small twisted seed  pod is produced. Some plant scientists have studied this plant and determined that like many other legumes, it can take nitrogen from air and make it into  fertilizer. USDA requires us to clean and  prepare every last piece before we drive them to the Inspection Station on the other side of the island. This requirement takes my wife and I, 2-3 days to pack items and get ready to ship. The whole next day we drive  around the island and get inspected (2-3 hours), then drive to the Airport Post Office to drop off. It takes the same work with the same type item if  you can understand.

The idea is to keep the plants from  dehydrating. Be careful if you decide to re-pot.  Re-potting voids any warranty. Plants are easily damaged with new/different mix.  Use NO fertilizers (this may kill your plants). Proper care is critical upon  arrival. Live Plants are NOT GUARANTEED  to survive under your care.
