Eugenia neonitida:
pitangatuba, native of Rio sandbanks. It looks like a giant yellow
cherry. The taste, however, is nothing bitter, and resembles that of
uvaia of the acidic bittersweet. Great potential for pulp
production, is much richer in vitamins and minerals that
cherry-common.
Eugenia neonitida is an
endemic Myrtaceae (with restricted area of distribution) of Rio de
Janeiro sandbanks, until recently almost unknown to the fruit
growers. In its natural habitat, is a compact shrub, from less than
1 m high. In growing conditions, reaches just under 2 m. Its trunk
has a rough outer shell, it gives off in plates. The leaves have
leather texture (leathery), are elliptical, pointed at the apex. Are
dark green on the upper surface and lighter on the bottom. The ribs
are well printed on top.
Fruit oblong 7 cm, side like a giant cherry, thick pulp, acidic and
very juicy, perfumadíssima.
Bittersweet flavor and pleasant, making it sweeter when grown in full sun.
Uses:
Consumed natural, juices and ice cream.
Also
used in the production of jams and jellies.
The plant is a small tree 1-2 m tall, dark-green leaves, thick and
shiny.
Grown in full sun beds, produces a beautiful landscaped effect.
Stands up
well to planting to the sea.
It can be kept in pots, and where fruits.
Cultivation: Enjoy any type of soil, if well drained.
Responds well
to a balanced fertilization.
Starts production between two and three years.

In the months from October to March, the plant blooms abundantly
fruiting between September and February in Brazil.
The fruits are to draw the attention of anyone, because come to
measure 7 cm x 5 cm, yellow-orange when ripe, at which give off a
fantastic aroma, higher than the best uvaias (Eugenia pyriformis).
The percentage of pulp is immense because the fruits have a single
seed, relatively small. This seed easily detaches from the rest of
the fruit. The pitangatuba is very juicy, seeming to "melt" when put
into the mouth, causing a pleasant feeling. Its taste is sweet and
sour, which can become as sweeter wherein the fertilized with
potassium (as KCI, for example) and cultivated under full sunlight.
It is worth repeating that the taste of Pitangão in no way resembles
that of the cherry-common. While the latter always has some resinous
flavor (that "amarguinho" characteristic), E. neonitida shows no
sign of bitterness, invariably leaving a pleasant taste in the
mouth.
She's a great adaptability of plant, doing well in hot or cold
climates, in any type of soil, and benefiting greatly from a good
fertilization. Can be planted in orchards or even in pots and
planters. Fruits prematurely from one and a half or two years. |

The first scientist to collect Pitangão (a popular synonym) was the
Frenchman Auguste de Saint-Hilaire, in Cabo Frio, in the then
Province of Rio de Janeiro. He ran extensive roadmap in our country
between the years 1816 and 1822. His witty adventures were narrated
in the form of travel writing, and published in Portuguese by
Editora Itatiaia, in Belo Horizonte (MG).
The material collected by Saint-Hilaire was studied by his friend
Jacques Cambessèdes, who toasted the new species with the epithet
Eugenia nitida, in 1832. However, it observed that this name
existed, it had been used by Friar José Mariano da Conceição Velloso
(in 1825) to designate another plant.
The German botanist Otto Karl Berg, realizing the double name,
renamed it the Phyllocalyx edulis in 1857.
Everything solved? None of that. Years later, new studies have shown
that Phyllocalyx genre was synonymous with Eugenia, transforming the
nomenclature Eugenia edulis.
Which in turn, already existed, created by the same Frei Velloso a
few paragraphs above for more a different species.
How much confusion! It was only in 1995 that fell to Prof. Marcos
Sobral, great scholar of the Myrtaceae family, create a name
(finally!) Could welcome the elected post today: Eugenia neonitida
(the word neo Latin means "new"). |
Super is a word derived from the Latin
formidabilis (fearful), which in Portuguese means "above the
ordinary by the intensity" enormous, colossal. In Brazil in the
1950s, the adjective began to be used to designate all that was
admirable, excellent or magnificent. Who lived or have relatives who
lived at that time, certainly knows the term.
Because in the XXI century, had to resort to this word to describe
pitangatuba, one of the Myrtaceae I like best.
Initially, I will address the question of its scientific name,
because in different publications she is approached under incorrect
names (for example, Eugenia edulis [Silva, S. & H. Tassara. 2005.
Fruits fruits Brazil. São Paulo, Company of Arts. 324 pp.]).
Remarks: Recent studies (eg, Vilar, J. et al, 2006. Potential
nutritional fruit Pitangão (Eugenia neonitida Sobral) aThe Rev.
Bras, 28 (3):...... 536-538) showed that
their nutritional values are much higher than those of the common
cherry (Eugenia uniflora), making it highly recommended for
commercial cultivation (pulp extraction). |

As
each order is packed and prepared separately you will pay
the quoted S/H charges individually per item. If you buy the
same species in that item it does calculate out the discount
(i.e.: additional items)
My stores' combined
shipping is built in for same items rather than a varied
selection. Domestic S/H includes postage, USDA certification
and inspection, proper packing and delivery to Airport for
prompt delivery. I can't really change any of these. If you
want one of this and one of that, it is hard to discount
much as each different species requires it's own prep,
packing, then at USDA each has to be unwrapped and inspected
then repacked. USDA requires me to clean and prepare every
last piece before we drive them to the Inspection Station on
the other side of the island. It takes my wife and I, 2-3
days to pack items and get ready to ship. The whole next day
we drive around the island and get inspected (2-3 hours),
then drive to the Airport Post Office to drop off. It takes
the same work with the same type item if you can understand.

LIVE PLANTS ARE PERISHABLE.
Live Plants are
NOT GUARANTEED
to survive under your care. There is the risk when you grow plants that they may die.
LIVE PLANTS are PERISHABLE, guaranteed not to live forever.
DO NOT expect any live plant to be GUARANTEED to remain alive. Plants are NOT GUARANTEED TO SURVIVE after you begin Care!
When you order a plant we assume you are prepared to care for it. Please have potting media and a container prepared for
your plant before it arrives. Shipping can be stressful on a plant, and any mistakes that you make upon arrival can stress the plant further, which is not good. Proper care is
critical upon arrival. It is your responsibility to know how to care for the plant.
IF YOU are NOT able to provide PROPER CARE, PLEASE DO NOT EXPECT it to be GUARANTEED after it perishes.
NO REPLACEMENT WILL BE CONSIDERED IF YOU HAVE REPOTTED THE PLANT.
Not every plant that I grow survives, and I am aware of that and accept the risk when I order. This is the risk that you as the buyer accept, because there is no way to know what kind
of conditions it will endure in the trip to your door. My responsibility ends when a live plant is delivered to your door. Live arrival is guaranteed, eternal survival is up to you.
Please Do NOT email me a week after potting your plant, and make a claim it arrived damaged. If you repot your plant after delivery, all warranties are voided and no replacement is offered. All
photos must be as arrived in original condition as received (in the box and packed as delivered).
If repotted, you are responsible for the condition of the plant.
NO REPLACEMENT WILL BE CONSIDERED IF YOU HAVE REPOTTED THE PLANT.

What is
GUARANTEED
is
LIVE ARRIVAL.
From delivery confirmation, you have only 48 hours from delivery confirmation to make any claim.
All claims need to be supported with Photos of the damaged plant(s) as
packed/unpacked, the box if damaged, the packing materials and any documents. I am very reasonable and understanding,
anything can happen to small plants in transit, for this reason uninsurable.
The expense to send it to you is most of your payment. To send any replacements, I
try to piggy back with your next order.
Replacement is not an option for CUSTOMS SEIZURE.
ALL OF MY ITEMS ARE SHIPPED USDA CERTIFIED WITHIN THE U.S. - USDA and USPS fees
are included in the actual cost of shipping and Handling.
Please do not leave a 1 or 2 in my detailed seller ratings for postage fees or any
reason really because I will block you from any further purchases.
Please contact me before eBay if you have any issue. I am the one
who can help you. Do not open any case for any reason really because I will block you from any further purchases.

Rare Seeds
Fresh Highest
Quality
Seller warrants seed to be of the variety and quantity
advertised. Safe delivery is guaranteed and seeds lost or
damaged during shipment will be replaced at seller's
expense. Claims must be made within 7 days of shipment. All
other replacements, refunds, returns and exchanges will be
made at the sole discretion of the seller.
Seed is a live product which depends on many important related
grower skills such as proper planting time, seed depth, type
of soil, irrigation, proper use of fertilizers, weed
controls, fungicides, insecticides, disease free soil, and
reasonable weather conditions during the growing period.
Germination is affected by such factors as temperature,
moisture content, light intensity and contamination of
planting media. These factors are totally out of the
seller's control and are the buyer's responsibility and
risk. Consequentially, the seller cannot unconditionally
guarantee seed to perform properly regardless of conditions
or the buyer's methods or mistakes.
