A stunning plant, it is also very challenging to grow to maturity. ~Imperial~ Alocasia This species is known for its rigid, surreal leaves. Steel gray with darker blue-gray veins and blushed red underneath and fairly compact. Alocasia nebula ~Imperialis~ This is considered one of the most highly prized of the Alocasias, and is quite rare. 	Make Room for the Imperial Alocasia As recently as the early 1980s, this plant had not yet been described and named scientifically, and was not available on the market. Back in the day, it was known as Alocasia guttata imperialis. Although A. nebula is now pretty well established in cultivation, its exact origins are obscure. The remarkable thing is that it is still unknown in the wild. This Imperial Jewel seems to combine the desirable characteristics of several of the others, having thick leaves, darkly colored main vein areas, wine-red leaf undersides, red spotting on the petioles, a bluish-gray overall appearance, and an extraordinary finicky nature.   This Alocasia has extremely thick leaves like cardboard and typically ashen blue-grey on the upper surface overlaid with deep blue-black zones around the midrib and primary veins.
Alocasia nebula is not a large plant, up to 70 cm when fully grown. The petiole are erect to erecto-spreading, with the lamina held at downwards angle to the petiole. The leaf color is medium grey with darker areas and the leaves can get up to 45 cm x 25 cm. When these plants are young, the leaves are peltate, but on maturing, the leaves lose the peltate characteristic. The Imperial Jewel Alocasia are small plants, in keeping with other Jewels, although a group or colony of them in a pot may become 18 to 20 inches in diameter overall. As far as care is concerned, the Imperial Jewel grows well in a greenhouse, planted in air-pots with well draining media and bright light. A nebula prefers soil PH on the acidic side, and has little tolerance for wet, or even too moist, feet. Thick leaves are the clue that periodic drying is part of the normal environment for this plant. But by 'drying', I mean that the water drains away quickly, leaving soil that is moderately moist but certainly not wet. These plants don't like to dry out completely. They just need to stay 'dryish'. I know that this is a paradoxical state for soil to be in, moist but not moist, dry but not dry, but such is the temperament of the Imperial Jewel.	Height: 18-24 in. Please have potting media and a container prepared for your plant before it arrives. Shipping can be stressful on a plant, and any mistakes that you make upon arrival can stress the plant further, which is not good. Proper care is critical upon arrival. It is your responsibility to know how to care for the plant. Not every plant that I order through the mail survives, and I am aware of that and accept the risk when I order. This is the risk that you as the buyer accept, because there is no way to know what kind of conditions it will endure in the trip to your door. My responsibility ends when a live plant is delivered to your door. Live arrival is guaranteed, eternal survival is up to you.
