~IPU~ Gourd Vine cv 'Umeke Native Hawaiian HULA DRUM GOURD 25 Seed Collector's

Price: $12.99

Lagenaria siceraria

cultivar: 'Umeke

Common Name: Bottle Gourd

Family: Cucurbitaceae (Gourd Family)

This Ipu was used to make musical instruments, Ipu pāi, the drum, including rattles, Ipu ‘ole, that accompanied hula.

This song beat is from the Ipu pāi musical instruments made from the gourd you see here.

In Polynesia, the double gourd drum was found only in the Hawaiian Islands, used to accompany hula and chants.

Gourd Drums and other Instruments

The gourd drum is known as pā ipu, or ipu pa‘i, which literally means “gourd to beat.” An ipu heke is a gourd drum with a top section, while an ipu ‘ole is a gourd drum without a top section. A gourd drum with a top section was made by joining two gourds together, with a larger, somewhat elongated gourd on the bottom and a more roundish gourd on top.

The gourds were joined using the gummy sap of ‘ulu (Artocarpus altilis, breadfruit). A strip of kapa (tapa) was sometimes wrapped around the area where the gourds were joined.

A loop in the kapa allowed the player to manipulate the drum, which could be hit on the side to produce a sharp, light sound, or the drum itself could be dropped onto the surface below, producing a deeper, somewhat dull tone.

The hōkiokio is a gourd whistle, or flute, made by putting three holes midway on the gourd, while a hole on the pointed end of the gourd was the one into which air was blown. The gourd whistle, used for entertainment by amorous partners, was also known as the lover’s whistle.

The fruit (gourd) of the ipu vine is green, maturing to a tan or beige color. The gourds vary in size and shape, containing a white pulp and many light-colored, flattish seeds, each about 1½ inches (3.8 cm) long.

The rind of the ipu gourd is woody and hard, which made it useful for a variety of purposes in ancient Hawai‘i. Gourds referred to as ipu wai or hue wai were used to hold water and other liquids, and gourds referred to as ipu ‘ai were used to hold food.

A long gourd calabash is referred to by the Hawaiian term hōkeo, while those used for kapa (tapa) barkcloth items (or food) are referred to as hulilau. An ipu variety on Maui and Moloka‘i with green, white-splotched fruit is known as kūkae‘iole, which literally means “dung of ‘iwa bird.”

An ancient Hawaiian proverb states:

“Pā mai, pā mai ka makani o Hilo; waiho aku i ka ipu iki, hō mai i ka ipu nui.” (“Blow, blow, O winds of Hilo, put away the small containers and give us the large one.”). Explained to mean, “La‘amaomao, the god of wind, was said to have a wind container called Ipu-a-La‘amomao. When one desires more wind to make the surf roll high, one makes this appeal.”

Ipu is the Hawaiian name for the plant as well as a general name for gourd containers, including dishes, pots and cups. Gourds used as containers were of the variety known as ipu mānalo, the “sweet” gourd,” while another variety, ipu ‘awa‘awa, or the “bitter” gourd, was used medicinally.

Gourds used as food bowls were known as ‘umeke pōhue. Bowls made from gourds are also referred to as calabashes, though this term now also refers to bowls made from shells of niu (Cocos nucifera, coconut), as well as bowls made from wood.

The Hawaiian saying “He ipu kā‘eo” (“A full calabash”), refers to “...a knowledgeable person.”

Lagenaria siceraria.

Also known by the Hawaiian term pōhue, ipu is a wide-spreading vine with branched tendrils and lobed (or 5-angled), roundish or heart-shaped leaves that are about 4 to 6 inches (10 to 15 cm) in diameter.

Ipu produces white flowers that are about 1½ inches (3.8 cm) long. The flowers grow individually in the leaf axils and bloom at night.

As each order is packed and prepared separately you will pay the quoted S/H charges individually per item. If you buy the same species in that item it does calculate out the discount (i.e.: additional item $7.61). My stores' combined shipping is built in for same items rather than a varied selection. S/H includes postage, USDA certification and inspection, proper packing and delivery to Airport for prompt delivery. I can't really change any of these. If you want one of this and one of that, it is hard to discount much as each different species requires it's own prep, packing, then at USDA each has to be unwrapped and inspected then repacked. USDA requires me to clean and prepare every last piece before we drive them to the Inspection Station on the other side of the island. It takes my wife and I, a day to pack items and get ready to ship. The whole next day we drive around the island and get inspected (2-3 hours), then drive to the Airport Post Office to drop off. It takes the same work with the same type item if you can understand.

For this reason uninsurable.

When you order a plant we assume you are prepared to care for it. Please have potting media and a container prepared for your plant before it arrives. Shipping can be stressful on a plant, and any mistakes that you make upon arrival can stress the plant further, which is not good. Proper care is critical upon arrival. It is your responsibility to know how to care for the plant.

Not every plant that I order through the mail survives, and I am aware of that and accept the risk when I order. This is the risk that you as the buyer accept, because there is no way to know what kind of conditions it will endure in the trip to your door. My responsibility ends when a live plant is delivered to your door. Live arrival is guaranteed, eternal survival is up to you.

Please Do NOT email me a week after potting your plant, and make a claim it arrived damaged. From delivery confirmation, you have only 48 hours from delivery confirmation to make any claim.

All claims need to be supported with Photos of the damaged plant(s) as packed/unpacked, the box if damaged, the packing materials and any documents. I am very reasonable and understanding, anything can happen to small plants in transit.

The expense to send it to you is most of your payment. To send any replacement(s), I try to piggy back with your next order.

Replacement is not an option for CUSTOMS SEIZURE.

ALL OF MY ITEMS ARE SHIPPED USDA CERTIFIED WITHIN THE U.S.- USDA and USPS fees are included in the actual cost of shipping and Handling.

Please do not leave a 1 or 2 in my detailed seller ratings for postage fees or any reason really because I will block you from any further purchases. I ship items the best and least expensive option. These are coming from Hawaii. The only thing inexpensive here in Hawaii are my items!! I do ship all my items promptly via best method--if you feel like the combined shipping fee is wrong, please wait to be invoiced and check back with me-I value your business and will work diligently to keep you satisfied. I am very generous and reasonable with reasonable people, just ask.

Seed is a live product which depends on many important related grower skills such as proper planting time, seed depth, type of soil, irrigation, proper use of fertilizers, weed controls, fungicides, insecticides, disease free soil, and reasonable weather conditions during the growing period. Germination is affected by such factors as temperature, moisture content, light intensity and contamination of planting media. These factors are totally out of the seller's control and are the buyer's responsibility and risk. Consequentially, the seller cannot unconditionally guarantee seed to perform properly regardless of conditions or the buyer's methods ont>
