Yoco has traditionally been used as a stimulant, most certainly due to the high caffeine presence in its bark; it also is used as a laxative, in addition to being used extensively for treatments in indigenous traditional medicine of the foothills. The Yoco plant (Paullinia yoco), which is a liana (climbing vine), in the family Sapindaceae, that grows prolifically in the Orito Ingi-Ande sanctuary. The name 'Ingi-Ande,' which means 'our territory' in the language of the Kofán people, is being used to underscore the robust participation of local indigenous peoples in the design and declaration of the sanctuary, part of which lies on Kofán ancestral lands	The Yoco medicinal plant originated in the western Amazon and is endemic to the tropical rainforests of the Amazonian foothills of Colombia, Ecuador, and the north of Peru, a region known as the Napo Pleistocene refuge.  The Yoco occupies an extent of occurrence of 48,635 km², although the extent of occurrence of the species could be as much as 132,345 km², which is to say as extensive as the traditional territories of the indigenous communities that have used it. There are no known reports of yoco’s use outside of the foothills.
	In Amazonia, this evergreen climber is known as Sapo Huasca (sapo means 'toad') and is purportedly used as an inebriant. The root cortex is said to contain a toxin ('timboine' or 'timbol') with narcotic properties (Duke and Vasquez 1994, Millspaugh 1974, Schultes 1942).  Stem bark contains up to 2% caffeine and other compound that create a feeling of euphoria. This plant forms a large liana in tropical rain forest. Full sun. Seems to prefer an acidic soil high in organic matter. Use a fertilizer with micronutrients. This plant will not tolerate cool conditions or frost. Outdoors in Zones 10 to 11.
The Inga, Kofan,and Coreguaje use yoco as a daily morning stimulant.  These Indians never go on hunting expeditions or journeys without taking a supply of pieces of the vine (Schultes 1942).	Reports from different authors agree that the indigenous groups that use yoco are the Kofanes, Sionas, Sequoias, Inganos, Coreguajes and probably some Huitotos. Paullinia yoco has been reported in only three countries: Colombia, Ecuador and Peru.

It is your responsibility to know how to care for the plant. Not every plant that I order through the mail survives, and I am aware of that and accept the risk when I order. This is the risk that you as the buyer accept, because there is no way to know what kind of conditions it will endure in the trip to your door.
