	Black chokeberry is a deciduous, cold-hardy shrub useful in landscape plantings, showing white flowers in the spring and colorful red foliage and heavy, dark fruit in the fall. Black Chokeberry has been planted extensively in Europe and Asia. In Russia, Denmark and eastern Europe the fruit is  widely used for juice and wine production. The Europeans have developed several varieties which are now available in the U.S. from commercial nurseries.   Chokeberry is commonly a shrub 1.5-2m tall, or grafted on half standard. It has medium to dark green glossy leaves which  makes it an excellent choice for hedges. Its autumn color is somewhat a bonus – from deep orange to bright carmine red. Black Chokeberry is soil tolerant and fully hardy also this plant is self-fertile and needs no pruning to encourage  fruiting. Upright and multi-branched, this plant's dark green, glossy leaves serve as the backdrop for heads of dainty white flowers in May that are a key  native insect nectar source. Berries appear in summer and ripen to black in fall and are feasted on by songbirds.
The berries have a fleshy, astringent flavor and sweeten slightly at the end of the growing cycle. The lustrous fruits are black, slightly larger than black currant, contain vitamin C and other important microelements such as ferrum and iodine.  They can be eaten fresh, in fruit salads or sundaes, or processed as stewed fruit, preserves, juices, wines. The dark blue to purple berries are high in vitamin C and contain some of the highest levels of antioxidants found in any plant. In spring the bush blooms  with small bouquets of small white flowers with dark green foliage. Clusters of deep blue to purple edible berries grow throughout the summer while the leaves  turn an intense orange to red in fall. Brilliant red fall color is striking.

Black Chokeberry prefers moist, well-drained, acidic soils of average to rich quality. However, this shrub is also an excellent  choice for those tough, low-lying wet areas where only moss and mosquitoes flourish. It also tolerates soils that are alkaline in pH, dry in summer, and sandy or rocky in  composition. And yet it can acclimate itself to dry, sandy locations as well. Harvested berries are best served in breakfast cereals, blended in smoothies and juices or cooked into sauces, syrups  and preserves. They can be dehydrated as a super healthy snack or fermented into a nice dry wine. Berries are harvested in fall and can be either dried or frozen for year round use. These berries are excellent dried. Fruits can be harvested gradually from September to October as they last on the tree/shrub without rotting for a long  time.
