This is the genuine Açaí palm, a very tropical palm from Brazil. The species Euterpe oleracea, called Açaí Palm is famous for its anti-oxidant qualities of the fruit juice and as a host of many health benefits - from weight loss, to increased energy and lower cholesterol. This magical palm is very ornamental, with multiple branches.

The Açaí palm is a fast grower with multiple clumping stems. It has pinnate leaves that start from a prominent crownshaft that is reddish color. It has adapted to live in periodically waterlogged and flooded soils by developing special root structures called pneumatophores. The Açaí palm will take full sun as it matures, it also likes high humidity.

Açaí Palm Inflorence

The Açaí fruit, a small, round, black-purple drupe about 1/4 inch (7–10 mm) in diameter, similar in appearance and size to a small grape but with less pulp, is produced in branched inflorescence of 700 to 900 fruits. Two crops of fruit are produced each year. The fruit has a single large seed about 7–10 mm in diameter. The skin of the ripe fruits is a deep purple color, or green, depending on the kind of açaí and its maturity.

The Açaí berries are harvested as food. In a study of three traditional Caboclo populations in the Amazon region of Brazil, açaí palm was described as the most important plant species because the fruit makes up such a major component of diet (up to 42% of the total food intake by weight) and is economically valuable in the region (Murrieta et al., 1999).

The round dark purple fruits are largely used worldwide for juices, energetic food, smoothies, ice cream, etc. Açaí stems can be used as pillars for small houses, and the leaves can be used to cover the roof. The heart of this palm  is also the primary species used for canned palm hearts. It's pretty fast growing so it can replace the cut canes in a few years. Açaí palms, since it clusters, can go on living to be harvested later. The juice is extracted from the small round fruit which is purple in color. The seeds are soaked in water to soften the thin outer shell. The seeds are then squeezed and strained to produce a dense purple liquid of incomparable flavor. This liquid is served ice cold with sugar and tapioca flour.

As açaí deteriorates rapidly after harvest, its raw material is generally only available outside the immediate growing region as juice or fruit pulp that has been frozen, dried, or freeze-dried. However, several companies now manufacture juices, health drinks, yogurts, and sorberts made from açaí berries, often in combination with other fruits.

The juice and pulp of açaí fruits (Euterpe oleracea) are frequently used in various juice blends, smoothies, sodas, and other beverages. In northern Brazil, açaí (or jussara, which is one of the fruit's common folk names) is traditionally served in gourds called "cuias" with tapioca and, depending on the local preference, can be consumed either salty or sweet. Açaí has become popular in southern Brazil where it is consumed cold as "açaí in the bowl", mostly mixed with granola - a fad where açai is considered as an energizer. Açaí is also widely consumed in Brazil as an ice cream flavor or juice.

Açaí Palm Trunk and Root Detail

Açaí is cultivated in humid regions, specially along with rainforests. It needs high temperatures, rich organic soil, and high moisture. Açaí palms will grow better with some shade and slow wind. Açaí palms live in seasonally flooded habitats and along water margins. Excellent landscaping palm if given a lot of water, Açaí thrives in Brazilian swamps. High in its needs for heat and water, Açaí palms tend to yellow and grow slowly with insufficent water. It flowers throughout the year and the harvesting season is usually from July to December. It produces both female and male flowers which are quite small and are brown to purple in color.

Combined Discounts Won Auctions

For 2-3 winning auctions, the combined discount is 10% of the total Shipping and Handling charges. For 4-7 winning auctions, the combined discount is 20% of the total Shipping and Handling charges. For 7+ winning auctions, the combined discount is 30% of the total Shipping and Handling charges.

As each order is packed and prepared separately you will pay the quoted S/H charges individually per item. If you buy the same species in that item it does calculate out the discount (i.e.: additional item $3.61). My stores' combined shipping is built in for same items rather than a varied selection. Includes postage, USDA certification and inspection, proper packing and delivery to Airport for prompt delivery. I can’t really change any of these. If you want one of this and one of that, it gets hard to discount much as each different species requires it's own prep & packing, then at USDA each has to be unwrapped and inspected then repacked. USDA requires me to clean and prepare every last piece before we drive them to the Inspection Station on the other side of the island. It takes my wife and I, a day to pack items and get ready to ship. The whole next day we drive around the island and get inspected (2-3 hours), then drive to the Airport Post Office to drop off. It takes the same work with the same type item if you can understand.
