aka Hurricane Palm

Dictyosperma album

Dictosperma album has two common names - Princess palm due to its graceful appearance and Hurricane palm because of its ability to withstand strong hurricane force winds. Princess palm grows to a height of 30 feet on a single grey-ringed trunk. The graceful pinnate leaves are 8-12 feet long and the leaflets are 3 feet long. When young, the tops of the fronds twist and droop because of the flexible midrib which gives a curving appearance to the leaves. One distinctive characteristic that is used to distinguish this palm from Archontophoenix palms, is the pronounced erect young spear leaves which look like long swords. The crownshaft is also distinctive as it is light green, white or red and covered in gray to brown scales. The inflorescence appears below the crownshaft in a large branching cluster. The flowers are yellow to red and the fruits are bullet shaped and purple or black in color.

Very similar in appearance to Archontophoenix alexandrae, Dictyosperma album is a about 33 ft tall, endemic to Reunion island and Mauritius. It is a monoceous species, with solitary erect trunk growing to 60 feet and 25 cm in diameter, often widening at the basis, brown or grey, often marked with vertical cracks. The leaves have regularly spaced pinnae (50-70 on each side). The inflorescence is a panicle of yellow flowers, the seeds black or purple black, 1,6-1,8 cm long and 8-10 mm wide, massively produced. It is quite a variable species, with several very distinct and colorful varieties.

Almost extinct in its native environment, because the palm heart is highly regarded for eating. The end shoot, locally called 'palm cabbage' is eaten in salads or gratin, a rather fine dish.

Princess Palm

A rather easy species to grow, Princess Palm is a medium fast grower, salt/wind tolerant. A rich and well drained soil will be appreciated, as well as a warm and sunny exposure. Light shade/full sun, well drained but lots of water.  Young plants make good subjects as indoor plants. Seedlings have beautiful colors, red/green striped leaves.

Sunny, moist, but well drained position, in the tropics or sub-tropics. Prefers shade as a youngster, but grows into full sun. A fast grower. prefers partial shade or partial sun to full sun; soil should be well drained. Requires consistently moist soil, Rich and sandy; do not let dry out between waterings.

Inflorescence: Branched, born below the crownshaft.

Dictyosperma album AKA Hurricane Palm, from its ability to withstand very strong winds.

Of the tribe Arecceae, it is also known by the botanic name

Combined Discounts Won Auctions

For 2-3 winning auctions, the combined discount is 10% of the total Shipping and Handling charges. For 4-7 winning auctions, the combined discount is 20% of the total Shipping and Handling charges. For 7+ winning auctions, the combined discount is 30% of the total Shipping and Handling charges.

As each order is packed and prepared separately you will pay the quoted S/H charges individually per item. If you buy the same species in that item it does calculate out the discount (i.e.: additional item $3.61). My stores' combined shipping is built in for same items rather than a varied selection. Includes postage, USDA certification and inspection, proper packing and delivery to Airport for prompt delivery. I can’t really change any of these. If you want one of this and one of that, it gets hard to discount much as each different species requires it's own prep & packing, then at USDA each has to be unwrapped and inspected then repacked. USDA requires me to clean and prepare every last piece before we drive them to the Inspection Station on the other side of the island. It takes my wife and I, a day to pack items and get ready to ship. The whole next day we drive around the island and get inspected (2-3 hours), then drive to the Airport Post Office to drop off. It takes the same work with the same type item if you can understand.
