The Sugar Apple (Annona squamosa) is a
small deciduous tree that only reaches a height of about 12 to 20
feet. This medium sized tree grows best in warm frost free areas. The leaves
are alternate, 6-8 inches long and thin. The tree loses those
leaves shortly after Christmas and is bare for about four to six weeks.
Flowers appear with the leaves in the spring. Fruits ripen starting
in mid to late summer through late fall.
Height: 10-20 ft.
(3-6.6 m)
Hardiness: USDA Zone 10a to 11:
to -1.1 °C (30 °F) above 4.5 °C (40 °F)
Sun Exposure: Full Sun to Partial Shade
Danger: Seed is poisonous if ingested
Bloom Color: Brown/Bronze
Bloom Time: Mid Spring/Early Summer
Foliage: Evergreen
Soil pH requirements: 7.6 to 7.8 (mildly alkaline), 7.9 to 8.5
(alkaline)
Fruits are anywhere from 3 to 5 inches in diameter with a lumpy green skin
and upon maturity the fruit has a bluish or white blush. Some varieties are
developed that have a red blush or red skin which are much more attractive.
At maturity fruits have a custard like white pulp with small black seeds and
the sweet flesh is eaten fresh or used for milkshakes and ice creams. During
wet summers often maturing fruit tends to split and this can be prevented by
picking the fruits just prior to full maturity and ripening them off the
tree.
The trees begin to fruit at just
one to two years of age, and they can easily be maintained at eight to
ten feet.
The seeds are scattered through the
fruit flesh; the seed coats are blackish-brown, 12–18 mm (0.47–0.71 in)
long, and hard and shiny.
Atis fruit is usually round, slightly pine cone-like, 6–10 cm (2.4–3.9
in) diameter and weighing 100–230 g (3.5–8.1 oz), with a scaly or lumpy
skin. There are variations in shape and size.
The fruit flesh is sweet,
white to light yellow, and resembles and tastes like custard. The edible
portion coats the seeds generously; a bit like the gooey portion of a
tomato seed.
Atis is a semi-evergreen shrub or small tree reaching 6–8 meters (20–26
ft) tall. The leaves are alternate, simple, oblong-lanceolate, 5–17 cm
(2.0–6.7 in) long and 2–5 centimeters (0.79–2.0 in) broad.
The flowers
are produced in clusters of 3-4, each flower 1.5–3 cm (0.59–1.2 in)
across, with three large petals and three minute ones, yellow-green
spotted purple at the base.
Sugar-apple has a very distinct, sweet-smelling fragrance.
The texture of the flesh that coats the seeds is a bit like the center
of a very ripe guava (excluding the seeds). It is slightly grainy, a bit
slippery, very sweet and very soft.
Trees are easily started from seed and it takes one to two years for
seedlings to start producing flowers. Many superior varieties are available
and these are sold through nurseries as grafted or budded plants. Trees have
few problems other than cold weather, but the fruit is attacked by Annona
seed borer and occasionally caterpillars might chew foliage.
Fruits,
once mature, can be cleaned and the pulp frozen for many months for future
use. If close to salt water, protect sugar apples from direct ocean spray
since this may cause burning of the thin leaves.
Sugar apples make great container plants, too, so if you don't have much
space try growing these in a 10 or 15 gallon tub, and they will still reward
you with a number of delicious fruit.
Atis Trees in the landscape should be fertilized every three to four months with
a citrus or palm type fertilizer containing good levels of micro-nutrients.
In highly alkaline soil deficiencies may develop that require nutritional
sprays to correct.

charges.
For 4-7 winning auctions, the combined discount is 20% of the total Shipping and
Handling charges.
For 7+ winning auctions, the combined discount is 30% of the total
Shipping and Handling charges.
As each order is packed and prepared separately you will pay the quoted S/H charges
individually per item. If you buy the same species in that item it does calculate out the
discount (i.e.: additional item $7.61). My stores' combined shipping is built in for same
items rather than a varied selection. S/H includes postage, USDA certification and inspection,
proper packing and delivery to Airport for prompt delivery. I can't really change any
of these. If you want one of this and one of that, it is hard to discount much as each
different species requires it's own prep, packing, then at USDA each has to be
unwrapped and inspected then repacked. USDA requires me to clean and prepare every last
piece before we drive them to the Inspection Station on the other side of the island. It
takes my wife and I, a day to pack items and get ready to ship. The whole next day we
drive around the island and get inspected (2-3 hours), then drive to the Airport Post
Office to drop off. It takes the same work with the same type item if you can understand.

LIVE PLANTS ARE PERISHABLE.
For this reason uninsurable.
When you order a plant we assume you are prepared to care for it.
Please have potting media and a container prepared for your plant
before it arrives. Shipping can be stressful on a plant, and any
mistakes that you make upon arrival can stress the plant further,
which is not good. Proper care is critical upon arrival. It is your
responsibility to know how to care for the plant.
Not every plant that I order through
the mail survives, and I am aware of that and accept the risk when I
order. This is the risk that you as the buyer accept, because there
is no way to know what kind of conditions it will endure in the trip
to your door. My responsibility ends when a live plant is delivered
to your door. Live arrival is guaranteed, eternal survival is up to
you.
Please Do NOT email me a week after potting your plant, and make a claim it
arrived damaged. From delivery confirmation, you have only 48 hours from
delivery confirmation to make any claim.
All claims need to be supported with
Photos of the damaged plant(s) as packed/unpacked, the box if damaged,
the packing materials and any documents. I am very reasonable and
understanding, anything can happen to small plants in transit.
The expense to send it to you is most
of your payment. To send any replacement(s), I try to piggy back with
your next order.
Replacement is not an option for
CUSTOMS SEIZURE.
ALL OF MY ITEMS ARE SHIPPED USDA
CERTIFIED WITHIN THE U.S.- USDA and USPS fees are included in the actual cost of shipping and
Handling.
Please do not leave a 1 or 2 in my
detailed seller ratings for postage fees or any reason really because I
will block you from any further purchases. I ship items the best and least expensive
option. These are coming from Hawaii. The only
thing inexpensive here in Hawaii are my items!! I do ship all my items
promptly via best method--if you feel like the combined shipping fee is
wrong, please wait to be invoiced and check back with me-I value your
business and will work diligently to keep you satisfied. I am very
generous and reasonable with reasonable people, just ask.

Seed is a live product which depends on many important related grower skills such
as proper planting time, seed depth, type of soil, irrigation, proper use of fertilizers,
weed controls, fungicides, insecticides, disease free soil, and reasonable weather
conditions during the growing period. Germination is affected by such factors as
temperature, moisture content, light intensity and contamination of planting media. These
factors are totally out of the seller's control and are the buyer's responsibility and
risk. Consequentially, the seller cannot unconditionally guarantee seed to perform
properly regardless of conditions or the buyer's methods or mistakes.
