The Kepel tree is considered to be one of the most beautiful of all tropical
ornamental/fruit trees.
A Soursop, Biriba, and Ylang Ylang relative, Burahol
(kepel fruit, or keppel apple) is a rare and endangered member of the
Anonaceae family.
Originating from Indonesia where the fruit is the object
of investigation for eventual use as a perfume. Back in the day, Sultans had
this tree planted on palace property. Fruits were reserved for ladies of the
Harem, and royalty, used as a breath freshener and an internal "perfume."
This tree is often covered in a blush of
pale pink and mauve new growth which seems fitting for it’s…^/^... other
qualities. It seems that the mango-colored fruit which sprouts directly from
its trunk offers two distinctly unique properties. Provocatively, it causes
all sweat and body excretions to smell like violets and renders women
temporarily infertile.
Not surprisingly, the fruit was once popular
“with ladies of the Sultan’s harem”.
I wonder if there is not a very entertaining story behind the
naming of this fruit after Henry Keppel, a British captain who cleared the
Singapore straits of pirates.
|
Kepel fruit is of a very agreeable flavor, aromatic, with undertones of
coconut. Ancient Indonesians believed that eating the fruit would cause body
secretions to take on a perfume scent. It is said that the consumption of this fruit will perfume a
person's excretions (such as urine or sweat) with the smell of violets.
Kepel fruit grows in a hot, humid climate and can be planted at sea level,
up to 300 m. It is propagated from seed, which typically germinate quickly,
but can take up to 12 months to develop the seedling shoot. The tree can
begin to bear fruit in 8-10 years and may produce each year thereafter.
Fruits are borne on the lower trunk and is said to have a spicy, mango-like
flavor. They take a while to ripen. You know
it’s ready to harvest when you peel away some skin with your nail and it is
orange underneath (rather than green).
It is a finicky, slow-growing tree and requires protection from full sun and
frost for the first few years before hardening off to a location for full
sun. I am surprised it is not more common.
|
|
|
The tree grows up to 40 feet tall, with a straight trunk, brilliant foliage,
spectacular bright pink leaves that flush out all at once over the entire
tree.
New foliage emerges a pale red color, making this a very decorative tree
with an attractive growth habit. It certainly deserves to be more widely
planted in the tropics, not only for it's foliage, but also for it's unique
fruit and history.. As the tree matures, it will begin to flower and fruit
more than once a year. If the tree is healthy, it will fruit prolifically,
providing hundreds of fruits right off the trunk.
Pinkish cream colored flowers bloom in abundance directly out of the truck
and develop into fruits the size of a small orange. The fruit has a brown,
leathery skin and contains numerous, l0ng, oval seeds in a creamy, light
orange flesh.

|
|
Flowering/Pollination: Cauliflorous; small white flowers. Can flower and
fruit more than once a year. Self fertile.
Tolerance: Intolerant of both drought and salt.
Soil/Nutrition: Fertile slightly acidic and well drained.
Light: Part shade to full sun (when older). Juvenile trees prefer filtered
sunlight / dappled shade.
Wind: New foliage is very tender; needs a sheltered location.
Temperature: Seedlings will die if exposed to temperatures below 40 degrees.
Generally, the Kepel is hardy to just above freezing when it is a few years
old. Always protect from wind when growing in a marginal climate.
|
Propagation: Propagation
is typically from seed, and is very slow. Fresh seeds can be sprouted in a
few weeks, but will not begin leafing out until a year or so after they are
planted. Be very patient with this species.
Height: over 40 ft. (12 m)
Hardiness: USDA Zone 10b: to 1.7 °C (35 °F)
Sun Exposure: Full Sun, Partial to Full Shade
Main Uses: Food, Foliage, "Perfume"
Growth Rate: Slow to Moderate. Very slow to germinate.
Mature Height/Spread: To 60' in the tropics. Usually smaller.

Indonesian Kepel
Fruit (Stelechocarpus burahol) as Oral Deodorant

Abstract: Kepel (Stelechocarpus burahol) fruit has been
known to have efficacy as an oral deodorant in Java Island, Indonesia
for a long time. The research aimed on Indonesian Herbal Kepel as
deodorant agent for reducing fecal odorants which are ammonia, trimethyl-amine
and phenol. Pharmacological screening test was conducted by measuring
the adsorbent activities of Kepel’s fruit (pulp, seed and peel) to
odorants which can be emitted from feces, such as ammonia (NH3)
and methyl-mercaptan (CH3SH).
To confirm Kepel's ability as an
oral deodorant, in vivo test was performed by applying it orally
on rats. Kepel’s fruits pulp powder was regarded as the best absorbent
agent (adsorbed 62.96 and 77.78% for NH3 and CH3SH,
respectively).
All fecal odorant on the 3rd and
7th day oral application result showed a significant decrease (p<0.05).
Beside the odorant adsorption, it also activates the probiotic
Bifidobacter sp. by increasing its population. In conclusion, Kepel
had a potential pharmacological activity as an oral deodorant through
its adsorbent function and probiotic activation.

BE USED. Multiple paypal payments are NOT eligible for

basis.
We will combine shipping for auctions won on the same week paid with same paypal payment.

Combined

For 2-3 winning auctions, the combined discount is 10% of the total Shipping and Handling
charges. For 4-7 winning auctions, the combined discount is 20% of the total Shipping and
Handling charges. For 7+ winning auctions, the combined discount is 30% of the total
Shipping and Handling charges.
As each order is packed and prepared separately you will pay the quoted S/H charges
individually per item. If you buy the same species in that item it does calculate out the
discount (i.e.: additional item $7.61). My stores' combined shipping is built in for same
items rather than a varied selection. S/H includes postage, USDA certification and inspection,
proper packing and delivery to Airport for prompt delivery. I can't really change any
of these. If you want one of this and one of that, it is hard to discount much as each
different species requires it's own prep, packing, then at USDA each has to be
unwrapped and inspected then repacked. USDA requires me to clean and prepare every last
piece before we drive them to the Inspection Station on the other side of the island. It
takes my wife and I, a day to pack items and get ready to ship. The whole next day we
drive around the island and get inspected (2-3 hours), then drive to the Airport Post
Office to drop off. It takes the same work with the same type item if you can understand.

LIVE PLANTS ARE PERISHABLE.
For this reason uninsurable.
When you order a plant we assume you are prepared to care for it.
Please have potting media and a container prepared for your plant
before it arrives. Shipping can be stressful on a plant, and any
mistakes that you make upon arrival can stress the plant further,
which is not good. Proper care is critical upon arrival. It is your
responsibility to know how to care for the plant.
Not every plant that I order through
the mail survives, and I am aware of that and accept the risk when I
order. This is the risk that you as the buyer accept, because there
is no way to know what kind of conditions it will endure in the trip
to your door. My responsibility ends when a live plant is delivered
to your door. Live arrival is guaranteed, eternal survival is up to
you.
Please Do NOT email me a week after potting your plant, and make a claim it
arrived damaged. From delivery confirmation, you have only 48 hours from
delivery confirmation to make any claim.
|
All claims need to be supported with
Photos of the damaged plant(s) as packed/unpacked, the box if damaged,
the packing materials and any documents. I am very reasonable and
understanding, anything can happen to small plants in transit.
The expense to send it to you is most
of your payment. To send any replacement(s), I try to piggy back with
your next order.
Replacement is not an option for
CUSTOMS SEIZURE.
ALL OF MY ITEMS ARE SHIPPED USDA
CERTIFIED WITHIN THE U.S.- USDA and USPS fees are included in the actual cost of shipping and
Handling.
Please do not leave a 1 or 2 in my
detailed seller ratings for postage fees or any reason really because I
will block you from any further purchases. I ship items the best and least expensive
option. These are coming from Hawaii. The only
thing inexpensive here in Hawaii are my items!! I do ship all my items
promptly via best method--if you feel like the combined shipping fee is

Rare Palm Seeds
Fresh
Highest Quality
Seller warrants seed to be of the variety and quantity advertised.
Safe delivery is guaranteed and seeds lost or damaged during shipment will be replaced at
seller's expense. Claims must be made within 7 days of shipment. All other replacements,
refunds, returns and exchanges will be made at the sole discretion of the seller.
Seed is a live product which depends on many important related grower skills such
as proper planting time, seed depth, type of soil, irrigation, proper use of fertilizers,
weed controls, fungicides, insecticides, disease free soil, and reasonable weather
conditions during the growing period. Germination is affected by such factors as
temperature, moisture content, light intensity and contamination of planting media. These
factors are totally out of the seller's control and are the buyer's responsibility and
risk. Consequentially, the seller cannot unconditionally guarantee seed to perform
properly regardless of conditions or the buyer's methods or mistakes.
