This is an unusual blooming vine, Aristolochia gigantea, the
Giant Dutchman’s Pipe, which has the shape of an old-fashioned meerschaum pipe.
Native to Brazil. Endemic to Tropical forest and stream banks.
The clusters of Aristolochia gigantea flowers on this woody vine, or liana, are really bizarre shaped and large flowered, with
the outrageous liver color.
After taking pictures of the pipes, I was researching and found that Rich Cech and Guy Tudor
describe the Polydamas Swallowtails in their book Butterflies of the East Coast, An Observer’s Guide, as a tropical
butterfly living at the edge of its range in Florida. The black caterpillars
with orange tubercles feed in clusters when young. Aristolochia gigantea is pollinated by flies. Mary Collins, senior
horticulturist, says the tiny flies are drawn to the pipe, fly inside and
then cannot get back out because of the downward facing hairs.
To grow Aristolochia gigantea, you’ll need a strong support, such as a heavy
trellis where it can find full sun to partial shade. Vigorous vines can be
pruned back to their main stem and branches after flowering, and fertilized
in February and October. Aristolochia gigantea has been recorded blooming
nearly year-round in the garden.

The flowers are smaller and less odoriferous than those of Aristolochia
grandiflora.
It is a very easy plant that grows abundantly. It is suitable to rapidly
cover a wall or fence. In USDA zone 8 it can be grown as an annual outside.
Common names:
Calico Flower, Dutchmans Pipe, Giant Dutchman's Pipe,
Pelican Flower
Synonym:
Howardia gigantea
Etymology:
Aristolochia: from the Greek aristos
(excellent, best) and lochos (delivery), which would refer to the
afterbirth. Gigantea: from the Greek giganteios (gigantic).
Description:
Aristolochia gigantea is a vine that can climb 20
meters high but usually grows 5-10 m high. The bark is cork-like and deeply
grooved.
The leaves are egg or heart-shaped, alternate, densely covered with white
hairs on the underside, measuring up to 15 cm long and 11 cm wide. The color
is a beautiful bright green.
The flowers appear singly or in groups on older lots. They have somewhat the
shape of a pipe and measure up to 30 cm long and 15 cm wide. The color is
dark red with cream-colored veins. They spread a carrion smell to attract
flies for pollination.
The fruits are sausage-shaped capsules, 8-13 cm long and 1-3 cm wide, which
burst open when mature to release the numerous seeds.
Hardiness: USDA Zone 9, 0 °C
Height: 5-10 m
Soil: Is satisfied with any soil, provided that it is well
drained.
Exposure: Full sun to partial shade.
Water: Water moderately in the summer, tolerates short
periods of drought.
Fertilizer: Fertilize monthly during growing season.
Pruning: Prune late in the winter or early in the spring to
give some model to the plant and limit growth.
Propagation: by Seed
Sowing instructions:
soak the seeds in water for 48 h
plant 1 seed per pot, in a light sowing mix
mist the substrate so that it is moist but not
wet
cover the pots to limit evaporation
place the pots in a warm place with at least 6
h of sunlight per day. When not enough light, complement with a growing
lamp.

Description:
|
|
Aristolochia gigantea is a robust,
twisting climber that can grow around a sturdy arbor or a tree
up to 30 feet tall or higher.
This vine has fleshy heart-shaped leaves
and large flowers exceeding a foot long and at least 6 inches
wide. The flower is astounding, impressive, strange and sinister
at the same time: it resembles a giant beefsteak. The mouth of
the pipe-shaped flower expands to a huge size and is colored
with a maroon and white netting effect. In the “mouth” there is
a central yellow spot where an opening leads into a closed
pouch. The back view of the flower superficially resembles a
pair of lungs with a canal leading into a stomach-like pouch.
The blossom is over 14 inches (36 cm) long. These huge, lemony
scented flowers bloom from summer until late winter. (Watson, L., and Dallwitz, M. J. 1992. 1999. The Families of
Flowering Plants: Descriptions, Illustrations, Identification,
and Information Retrieval.) (Dimmitt, Mark A. 2000. Flowering Plants of the Sonoran Desert.)

Species Interconnections and Interdependencies:
|
|
Giant Dutchman’s Pipe has developed an
ingenious way to make the flies do all the pollination work.
First, the fly, which is already coated with pollen from another
flower it has recently visited, is attracted to the sight and
smell of the open flower.
As it follows the scent down to the main
chamber of the flower, it is prevented from exiting by the stiff
hairs from inside the pipe, which traps the insect inside. Since
the hairs point downward, the fly must move in that direction.
Deep inside the flower, the pollen-covered fly brushes up its
head against the flower’s receptive stigma, depositing pollen
from the previous flower. The next day the flower stops
producing the scent that attracted the flies and releases pollen
on the captives. Only then does the flower relax the stiff hairs
and release the flies to carry the pollen to another flower. (Dimmitt, Mark A. 2000. Flowering Plants of the Sonoran Desert.)

As each order is packed and prepared separately you will pay the quoted S/H charges
individually per item. If you buy the same species in that item it does calculate out the
discount (i.e.: additional items)
My stores' combined shipping is built in for same
items rather than a varied selection. Domestic S/H includes postage, USDA certification and inspection,
proper packing and delivery to Airport for prompt delivery. I can't really change any
of these. If you want one of this and one of that, it is hard to discount much as each
different species requires it's own prep, packing, then at USDA each has to be
unwrapped and inspected then repacked. USDA requires me to clean and prepare every last
piece before we drive them to the Inspection Station on the other side of the island. It
takes my wife and I, 2-3 days to pack items and get ready to ship. The whole next day we
drive around the island and get inspected (2-3 hours), then drive to the Airport Post
Office to drop off. It takes the same work with the same type item if you can understand.

LIVE PLANTS ARE PERISHABLE.
For this reason uninsurable.
When you order a plant we assume you are prepared to care for it.
Please have potting media and a container prepared for your plant
before it arrives. Shipping can be stressful on a plant, and any
mistakes that you make upon arrival can stress the plant further,
which is not good. Proper care is critical upon arrival. It is your
responsibility to know how to care for the plant.
Not every plant that I order through
the mail survives, and I am aware of that and accept the risk when I
order. This is the risk that you as the buyer accept, because there
is no way to know what kind of conditions it will endure in the trip
to your door. My responsibility ends when a live plant is delivered
to your door. Live arrival is guaranteed, eternal survival is up to
you.
Please Do NOT email me a week after potting your plant, and make a claim it
arrived damaged. From delivery confirmation, you have only 48 hours from
delivery confirmation to make any claim.
|
All claims need to be supported with
Photos of the damaged plant(s) as packed/unpacked, the box if damaged,
the packing materials and any documents. I am very reasonable and
understanding, anything can happen to small plants in transit.
The expense to send it to you is most
of your payment. To send any replacements, I try to piggy back with your next order.
Replacement is not an option for
CUSTOMS SEIZURE.
ALL OF MY ITEMS ARE SHIPPED USDA CERTIFIED WITHIN THE U.S.
- USDA and USPS fees are included in the actual cost of shipping and Handling.
Please do not leave a 1 or 2 in my detailed seller ratings for postage
fees or any reason really because I will block you from any
further purchases.
I ship items the best and least expensive option. These are
coming from Hawaii. The only thing inexpensive here in
Hawaii are my items!! I do ship all my items promptly via
best method--if you feel like the combined shipping fee is
wrong, please wait to be invoiced and check back with me-I
value your business and will work diligently to keep you
satisfied. I am very generous and reasonable with reasonable
people, just ask.

Seed is a live product which depends on many important related grower skills such
as proper planting time, seed depth, type of soil, irrigation, proper use of fertilizers,
weed controls, fungicides, insecticides, disease free soil, and reasonable weather
conditions during the growing period. Germination is affected by such factors as
temperature, moisture content, light intensity and contamination of planting media. These
factors are totally out of the seller's control and are the buyer's responsibility and
risk. Consequentially, the seller cannot unconditionally guarantee seed to perform
properly regardless of conditions or the buyer's methods or mistakes.
