You are bidding on * live starter plant seedlings with vigorous root systems * inches tall with * leaves born and growing in a  small container for ease of transplant.

Pedalai

Pedalai turn red when ripe, and have hairs like a giant Rambutan.

This fruit not only sounds exotic but looks and tastes like Marang and Mango combo.

Pedalai is found growing naturally in Sarawak and Borneo (Kalimantan). Cultivated as well as growing wild in the  Philippines, Pedalai is uncommonly cultivated in Hawaii.

Pedalai, like the breadfruit, is a tree, has leaves are oval-shaped, large, and rough like sandpaper.
Pedalai fruit is studded with short, soft, greenish yellow soft spines  like a Rambutan.

When ripe, it produces a strong, penetrating fruity odor. The rind  is thick and fleshy.

Pedalai fruit is considered superior in flavor to either Jakfruit or Cempedak.

Its fruit is 16 cm long, 13 cm in diameter, and weighs about 1,000 to 1,800 grams.

The thick, fleshy rind is thickly studded with greenish, yellowish, blunt spines. Inside it is a white, soft, sweet, and  aromatic flesh from which many whites seeds easily separate.

The fruit is also highly perishable that’s why it is carefully harvested by cutting its peduncle and then placing it carefully  in woven baskets or boxes.

The flesh is separated into segments clinging to the central core and each segment contains a seed surrounded by a sweet, juicy coating that is the  edible part of the fruit.

The fruit has also a strong scent especially when it is ripe. Once opened, it should be consumed immediately or in just  a few hours as it easily loses flavor and oxidizes.

Pedalai tree will grow in a wide range of soil types-from light to heavy soils-but it will grow better in deep,  loamy soil with a pH ranging from 5.5-8. It also yields best in places that are elevated at 800 m above sea level.

Pedalai is a exotic dessert fruit. After all, it is nutritious; it contains protein, fat, carbohydrates, crude fiber, ash, calcium, phosphorus, iron, retinol, beta-carotene, vitamin A, thiamine, riboflavin, niacin, and ascorbic acid.

It is propagated by budding, grafting, and marching.

Pedalai turn red when ripe, and have hairs like a giant rambutan. Pedalai have sweet kernels, and a very fine flavor.

Related To: Marang, Jackfruit, Chempedak

Main Uses: Fruit, Seeds, Ornamental

Growth Rate: Moderate to fast.

Mature Height/Spread: Medium sized tree. Usually under 25' but can be larger.

Flowering/Pollination: Self-fertile

Tolerance: No salt tolerance. Little drought tolerance.

Soil/Nutrition: This species is described as being partial to alluvial soils; mineral rich humus deposits left by lakes and streambeds. Generally,  it prefers slightly acidic soils rich in nutrients. A light mix of peat and perlite seems ideal for growing this species in a pot. It performs well on  amended sandy soils. Micro-nutrients are very beneficial.

Light: Appreciates shade when young, and adapts to full sun as it matures. If growing in a pot, give it filtered sunlight for the best results. Direct sun often  taxes/burns trees under 6 feet.

Wind: Leaves are very large, needs a sheltered location.

Temperature: Young trees are shocked by temperatures in the 30's, and will slowly succumb within 12 hours at those temperatures. Anything below  freezing usually top-kills this species to the ground. It is slightly more cold tolerant when older and established, being more tolerant than  breadfruit (artocarpus atilis).

Dangers: None.

Diseases Prone:

Bearing Age: 3-4 years from seed.

Fruit: Odd-looking read hairy fruit are generally softball sized, with soft sweet white pegs inside. Flavor is considered  excellent, among the finest of the sweet tasting artocarpus. Small chesnut-flavored seeds are collected and boiled, also considered excellent.

History/Origin: Pedalai is native and most common to Malaysia and Borneo; it is also grown in the Phillippenes to some extent. The fruits are usually  collected in the wild, but there are many hobbyists and enthusiasts through the tropics who grow it for it's showy, interesting fruit.

Species Observations: This tree grows quickly when happy, and suffers rather overtly when unhappy. It will drop most of it's leaves if it gets too cold,  too dry, or malnourished. This species respirates constantly, so high humidity is very ideal for keeping it happy and vigorous.

Propogation: Seeds, which although perishable, will sprout readily when fresh.

Container Culture: Possible; grow in dappled shade or filtered light.

Medicinal Uses: Unknown.

Nutritional Information: Similar to jackfruit, Pedalai is high in carbohydrates, fiber, and high in minerals like potassium.

Preparation / Food: Eaten fresh. Seeds are boiled for 7-10 minutes, then roasted or used in various ways, similar to jackfruit seeds.

This incredible fruit like other Artocarpus grows on very large trees with huge leaves. The fruits are  like covered with stringy sticky protuberances which quickly dry up and darken once harvested. Inside the seeds are covered with a marshmallow  whitish aril that is very sweet somewhat reminiscent of a melted marshmallow!

Very large rainforest tree to 120ft. Eaten fresh. Seeds are also edible. Pedalai comes from northern Borneo,  the Philippines, Sulawesi and the Moluccas. It is a very rare specimen in Borneo. It is occasionally seen growing on the steep, clay hillsides of the  inland regions. The foliage consists of very large (40 X 25 cms) handsome, dark green leaves, spectacularly digitately lobed when young but entire when  mature. Pedalai bears some very beautiful, eye-catching, bright orange skinned fruits, globular in shape and about 15 cms in diameter.

Small soft  protrusions on the fruit surface sprout curly, yellow hairs like a giant rambutan. Pedalai is similar to the marang inside, but has a superior  flavor, firmer flesh and slightly larger segments. The sweet, creamy-white flesh is easy to eat and like the marang the segments cling to the central  core when the skin is removed. As with all the Artocarpus species the seeds are edible and those of Pedalai are considered to be some of the  tastiest. They may be boiled, roasted or fried. Fruit odor is not as strong as it is with the fruit of the marang, Artocarpus odoratissimus.

The appearance of the fruit can be regarded as an intermediate shape between the jackfruit and the breadfruit. The fruit is round to oblong, 15-20 cm  long and 13 cm broad, and weighing about average weight about 1 kg. The thick rind is covered with soft, hair-like spines. They become hard and brittle as the fruit  matures. The fruit does not fall to the ground when ripe. It should be harvested while still hard, and left to ripen until soft. Pedalai fruits turn red when ripe. The  ripe fruit is opened by cutting the rind around, twisting and gently pulling. The interior of the fruit is somewhat similar to a Jakfruit, but the color is white then  red. The flesh is softer and way better tasting.

The seedlings are allowed to harden for at least two months when these are at least 1 foot tall with three  pairs of leaves each. The ideal distance between seedlings in an open field is 6 m x 6 m in a square system. It can be intercropped while it  is still unproductive. It starts to bear fruits at 4 to 5 years of age.

This tropical fruit tree will not thrive in regions where temperature falls below 32°. Pedalai looks like jackfruit and seeded breadfruit, but it is far  superior in quality to either of these. Indigenous in Borneo, Pedalai is popularly grown especially from July to September.

For 8+ winning auctions, the combined discount is 30% of the total Shipping and Handling charges.

As  each order is packed and prepared separately you will pay the quoted S/H charges individually per item. If you buy the same species in that item it  does calculate out the discount (i.e.: additional items)

My stores' combined shipping is built in for same items rather than a varied  selection. Domestic S/H includes postage, USDA certification and inspection, proper packing and delivery to Airport for  prompt delivery.

I can't really change any of these. If you want one of this and one of that, it is hard to discount  much as each different species requires it's own prep, packing, then at USDA each has to be unwrapped and inspected  then repacked. USDA requires us to clean and prepare every last piece before we drive them to the Inspection Station on  the other side of the island.

This requirement takes my wife and I, 2-3 days to pack items and get ready to ship. The whole next day  we drive around the island and get inspected (2-3 hours), then drive to the Airport Post Office to drop off. It takes  the same work with the same type item if you can understand.

Before you purchase After you Receive your Items.
LIVE PLANTS ARE PERISHABLE.

There is the risk when you grow plants that they may die.  LIVE PLANTS are PERISHABLE, guaranteed not to live forever.

US orders ONLY are GUARANTEED for LIVE ARRIVAL . All International orders are shipped at the BUYER's  RISK!

When you order a plant we assume you are prepared to care for it. It is your responsibility to know how to care  for the plant. Do some research before they arrive or seek experienced help.

Small plants need protection from many things, wind, sun, dry-out. They do well just in the garage or living  room. They need good light but not sunlight (full sun will burn small plants). Small pots dry-out easily. Just sitting in a shallow tray of water works  well. The idea is to keep the plants from dehydrating.

Be careful if you decide to re-pot.  Re-potting voids any warranty. Plants are easily damaged with new/different mix. Use NO fertilizers (this may kill your plants).  Proper care is critical upon arrival. Live Plants are NOT GUARANTEED  to survive under your care. DO NOT expect any live plant to be GUARANTEED to remain alive. Plants are NOT GUARANTEED TO SURVIVE after you begin Care! Live arrival is guaranteed,  eternal survival is up to you.

IF YOU are NOT able to provide PROPER CARE, PLEASE DO NOT EXPECT plant to be GUARANTEED after it perishes.

NO REPLACEMENT WILL BE CONSIDERED IF YOU HAVE REPOTTED THE PLANT.

BROWN  THUMB WARNING: Please Do NOT email me after  a week after receiving your plant,  and make a claim it arrived damaged. All photo support  must be as arrived in original condition when received (in  the box and packed as delivered).

If you repot your plant after delivery, all warranties are voided and no replacement is offered.

If repotted, you are responsible for the condition of the plant. NO REPLACEMENT WILL BE CONSIDERED IF YOU HAVE REPOTTED THE PLANT.

Not every plant that I grow survives, and I am aware of that and accept the risk when I order. This is the risk that you as the buyer accept, because there is no way to know what kind  of conditions it will endure in the trip to your door. My responsibility ends when a live plant is delivered to your door.

You are agreeing to these terms when you make this purchase from this listing.

Seed is a live product which depends on many important related grower skills such as proper planting time, seed depth, type of soil, irrigation, proper use of fertilizers, weed controls, fungicides, insecticides, disease free soil, and  reasonable weather conditions during the growing period. Germination is affected by such factors as temperature, moisture content, light intensity and contamination of planting media. Consequentially,  the seller cannot unconditionally guarantee seed to perform properly regardless of conditions or the buyer's methods or mistakes..
