In Egypt, this cultivar 'Bassateen El Sabahia' has long been the standard commercial guava.
There are countless varieties of guava in the world and the prevalent one in Egypt is the
yellowish pear-shaped kind with thick white flesh. It contains fewer seeds than some of other guava varieties.

Egyptian Guava are small trees or shrubs with leathery leaves and a bark that peels easily from the branches.
They are native to tropical Africa. The fruits are pear shaped, ripening from green to yellow to white. Egyptian Guava is pear-shaped, of medium size,
sometimes pink-blushed, with thick, white flesh, few seeds, good flavor and higher
ascorbic acid content. Ripe Egyptian Guavas are a pale yellow at their sweetest. It bears well over a long season.

This tree, 20-40ft, has very attractive bark with a smooth satiny sheen and variegated shades of reddish-brown, blondes and grays.

This white skinned fruit has an excellent familiar flavor, tasting of the island flavor known and loved world wide.
Fruits are small, to 3-5" around. The very juicy pulp is creamy white inside, very good, creamy and tastes pleasantly spicy.

Egyptian Guava trees do well on the beach areas. It is probably the easiest of the truly 'tropical' fruit trees and are very fast growing. Not fussy on the soil quality, Egyptian Guava produces fruit year after year. If you have only one subtropical fruit, Egyptian Guava should be it.

Egyptian Guava bears fruit after 2 years growth. The fruit is very aromatic and may be eaten fresh or made into a juice or paste for later use.
Upon ripening, the guava becomes soft and juicy, then may be eaten fresh, made into a juice or nectar contain fruit pulp, or made into preserves, jam, jelly, or paste.

The Egyptian Guava is well suited to the subtropics. Egyptian Guava is very adaptable and can be grown outdoors almost anywhere
if protected from hard freezes including Zone 9a.

In subtropical climates, Egyptian Guava is most often found growing at lower elevations, where the mean temperature is warmer.
The Tropical Guava is invasive in many parts of Hawaii. There are also major infestations on many Caribbean islands.

The Guava is susceptible to numerous insects, such as whitefly and numerous types of scale.
