PSIDIUM CATTLEIANUM amarela var ANESTOR

MYRTACEAE FAMILY

NOMENCLATURE AND MEANING:  ARAÇÁ AMAREO comes from the words of the Tupi Guarani: ARÁ-Fruta + eçá - eyes, referring to the persistent sepals that appear to form eyelashes. Also it receives the names: Araçá yellow, Araçá red, Araçá of crown, Araçá of the brejo, Araçá sweet, Araçá of the field, Araçá of eating, Araçá of the beach, Araçá living (Because of the fruit of red color), Goiabinha and Guava Ipiranga.

ORIGIN:  An endemic species of the Atlantic Forest that occurs from the south of Bahia to the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, appearing mainly in the headwaters of floodplains and springs of streams and in the highlands where the soil is very humid.

OBSERVATIONS: There are SOME natural varieties: one with red fruits scientifically called Psidium cattleyanum var. purpureum in the RS restinga. OTHER with yellow fruits scientifically called Psidium cattleyanum typical formfound in practically every southern and southeastern region, always bordering on swamps. And from this, researcher Ayrton Raseira from Embrapa of Temperate Climate of Pelotas, RS, has launched the Ya-cy (Tupi moon) variety whose plant begins to bear fruit with 18 months in the field and the fruit can weigh up to 40 grams. And there is still the STRONG FORM, called scientifically Psidium cattleyanum var. variabile that was found by the great friend and collector Anestor Mezzomo (in memory) which he honored by calling this variety ARAÇÁ ANESTOR.

Features: It is a shrub of 2.5 to 4 m of height, arriving with very rarity to the 7 to 8 m of height when in clearings in the middle of the forest. The crown is round, irregular and sparse reaching twice the height of the plant. The trunk is tortuous, with a smooth and shiny gray rhytidoma, and once a year the bark is detached in papyraceous laminae (like strips of paper), showing the inner bark that is greenish and has an orange and finally grayish coloration. The young branches are glabrous (hairless) or rarely pebulo (with small, upright hairs). The leaves are simple, opposite, coriaceous, and obovate (with inverted egg shape, with the wide part at the apex), fixed by petiole (stem or support) from 4 to 12 mm in length. The limbus (leaf tissue) measures 4 to 9 cm in length by 2 to 5.5 cm in width. The base is acute or cuneiform (cuia shaped) and the apex is attenuated, obtuse, that is, it is smoothly rounded. The open flower is white, fragrant and measures 2 cm in diameter, consisting of a calyx (outer shell) with 4 to 5 lobes or cutouts in the form of concave teeth that rupture in the anthesis. The corolla is formed by 4 or 5 white and obovate petals of 7 to 8 mm in length that are mixed with the stamens. The fruits are sub-hemispherical berries (that is almost round) of 3 to 4.6 cm of diameter with yellow bark or red depending on the variety, having at the apex a deep crown with 4 persistent sepals. The pulp is white or purplish, sweet with a slightly acidic background, involving 50 to 110 planed, reniform (kidney-shaped) and cream-colored seeds. fragrant and measuring 2 cm in diameter, being formed by calyx (outer shell) with 4 to 5 lobes or cutouts in the form of concave teeth that break in the anthesis. The corolla is formed by 4 or 5 white and obovate petals of 7 to 8 mm in length that are mixed with the stamens. Tips for cultivation:  It is easy to cultivate, as it adapts to different types of climate and soil. It can be cultivated from sea level up to 2,000 m altitude as it occurs in Ecuador where this species is quite productive as well. Rainfall rates can vary from 1,200 to 3,100 mm annually, with air humidity ranging from 75 to 85%. The soils that this species prefers are: cambisols (sandy and rich in organic matter, planosols (plains of Rio Grande do Sul), latosol (red earth or yellow earth) or any land that has the same characteristics of being well drained , deep and with good natural fertility and have pH ranging from 4.5 to 6.2. The yellow Araçá is resistant to minimum of up to - 4 degrees and to periods of drought, supporting a brief period of soiling of the soil.

Seed is a live product which depends on many important related grower skills such as proper planting time, seed depth, type of soil, irrigation, proper use of fertilizers, weed controls, fungicides, insecticides, disease free soil, and reasonable weather conditions during the growing period. Germination is affected by such factors as temperature, moisture content, light intensity and contamination of planting media. These factors are totally out of the seller's control and are the buyer's responsibility and risk. Consequentially, the seller cannot unconditionally guarantee seed to perform properly regardless of conditions or the buyer's methods or mistakes.
